FEBRUARY BOOK OF THE MONTH

‘The Gospel Comes with a House Key’ by Rosaria Butterfield.

Rosaria Butterfield invites us into her home to show us how God can use this same “radical, ordinary hospitality” to bring the gospel to our lost friends and neighbours.

Such hospitality sees our homes as not our own, but as God’s tools for the furtherance of his kingdom as we welcome those who look, think, believe, and act differently from us into our everyday, sometimes messy lives—helping them see what true Christian faith really looks like.

We have physical copies available for purchase over in the church hall. However, if you wish to order your own copy online or read via Kindle, you can do that here.

GIVING UPDATE

Each week we need to receive $6300.00 in order to meet our commitments. Last month, our average weekly giving was $5616.00, leaving a gap of $684.00. Up to the end of the last calendar month we needed to have received $218,400. Compared to that total we received $195,239, leaving a gap of $23,161.

Electronic giving is a great way to give! It helps us prayerfully plan our giving, and then the bank will help us keep that commitment, even when we may be unable to attend. To give by direct transfer then these are the NEW details. Account name: Jamberoo Anglican Church. Account number: 356831. BSB: 032605.

Candidates Forum – 7pm Tuesday 21st February

This Tuesday night, the 21st February, our church at Jamberoo Anglican will be hosting a special, two-hour ‘Candidates Forum’ that will enable us to hear from the four people who want us to elect them as our representatives in the NSW Lower House.

It will be a packed, two-hour program from 7pm, where each candidate will be given a chance to deliver a short speech about the impact of faith on their policies and leadership.

As they prepare for the evening, I sent them four questions about issues we consider to be important.

Firstly, I asked them whether they support legislation that protects the freedom of religious bodies to operate in accordance with their values and to preference staff who align with them.

Secondly, I asked them to indicate their party’s response to the Crime Commission’s recommendation on poker machines, and what their party plans to do to address the epidemic of gambling harm in NSW.

Thirdly, I asked them whether they were willing to confirm their support for SRE and commit to seeing the reintroduction of the religious identity question to the school enrolment form.

Finally, I asked them that if there was a bill banning conversion therapy practices, whether they would commit to protecting consensual pastoral care such as prayer and other spiritual support for a person who wishes to live in accordance with their faith.

Our church prays for politicians every week because we know that our Lord God has placed people in positions of authority as his servants, and that they are sent for our good (Romans 13:1,4.)

That is why it’s great for us to hear from them on matters of faith, and provide a place where they, too, can hear from us about what we consider to be of greatest importance.

JODIE McNEILL

Coming up this Sunday 19th February 2023

This Sunday we are going to be hearing from God’s word as Jodie McNeill preaches to us from 1 Corinthians 7:1-16 on ‘Marriage Matters’.

After our 9am service we’ll be enjoying brunch together, and after our 4pm service we’ll be having dinner.

We’d love you to join us in-person if you’re able, or watch our livestream at watch.jamberooanglican.com.

Here are the questions that Jodie plans on answering this Sunday:

1 Is sexual sin more serious than other sins?
2 Does our sin actually make God ‘unclean?’
3 Why do we obey some laws in Leviticus but not others?
4 Why wasn’t Abram punished for sleeping with his wife’s servant?
5 What should we say to non-Christians about sexual sin?
6 Why did Paul hand some people over to Satan? (1 Timothy 1:20)
7 How should we manage conflict when the other person think they’ve done nothing wrong?
8 Are Christians now God’s slaves, and if so, is that good? (1 Corinthians 6:19-20)
9 When should a school kid use force to defend themselves from physical attacks?
10 Because Jesus was both sinless and God, did that make his temptations easier to resist?

If you’d like to submit your own question to be answered in church in the future, then simply hit ‘reply’ to this email.

We’re really looking forward to seeing you on Sunday!

Here are the questions that Jodie plans to answer this Sunday:

1 Where does it say in the Old Testament that Christians will judge the world?
2 Will all Christians judge the world or will it only be the apostles?
3 Why should we judge people when Jesus says not to cast the first stone (John 8:7)?
4 If someone else is suffering wrong then should we stand up for them (1 Corinthians 6:7)?
5 How does it look to take a person’s sin to the whole church then treat them as an unbeliever?
6 How do we hold each other accountable so that we can confess sins to each other and repent?
7 How should we deal with sins in others that are private and unseen?
8 Why are we acknowledging the Wodi Wodi people and not other past and current custodians?
9 When should people start giving the pledges they made last year to put Brad on staff?
10 What happened this week with the Church of England?

We’re really looking forward to seeing you on Sunday!

Our Mothers Minister

Two years ago we asked Mothers Union Sydney for a special grant for an all-new position of ‘Mother’s Minister’, and they graciously supplied us with the funds to employ Gemma Bartlett for the part-time role.

At the time, I described the role in this way:

We wish to employ a mature and experienced Christian mother to help strengthen and support new and younger mothers in our church to be godly wives who serve their husbands as they bring up their children in the discipline and instruction that comes from the Lord.

They will teach how to develop Christian homes as a place for nurturing children, which will then be a natural environment to invite unbelievers in their networks to witness the outworking of the Word of God in the lives of their families and homes.

This will involve one-to-one discipleship of mothers in our church; the opportunity to train, resource and empower other experienced Christian mothers and grandmothers to share this ministry; and to prayerfully gather all members of our parish to seek to make disciples of all nations, one mother and family at a time.

We also long to be a parish that learns and then shares from its ministry experience, in order to equip other, similar churches in rural and regional churches with this important, specialised ministry.

I’m delighted to share that Gemma and all the Bartletts will remain with us as members of our church into the future, and will keep helping mothers and everyone grow in our ministry.

We recognise with great thanks the special contribution Gemma has made to the life of our church whilst serving in this 24-month role, and we thank God for the vision and resources of Mothers Union Sydney in providing us with the grant.

We’re also thankful for how our intergenerational focus has been fanned into flame under her leadership, and for the ongoing impact this has on everyone in our church.
